Domain #1 is all about knowing your students and how they learn best. A teacher should know the different ways their students learn. Domain #1 also is about using different resources in the classroom to help advance their students education. Domain #1 also talks about how it is the teachers job to remove any misconceptions that the students may have. The teacher is aware of their content and knows how to clearly explain what they are teaching to their students. Domain #1 is so important because it shows the importance of a teacher knowing their students. It is also important because is shows that preparation and resources are very helpful to advancing a students understanding of what they are being taught.
1a: Planning and Preparation
To guide their students' learning, the teacher knows what they are teaching.
Teacher know that what they are teaching is relevant to the 21st century.
Knows what concepts and skills contribute to the disciplines that is taught.
Being aware of any misconceptions that could possibly come up.
Know the content- be able to present the big picture and the small picture.
Know your students- Know what level your students are learning at and to be able to change teaching technique for individual students.
Have clear and accurate explanations/answers to students questions.
1b: Demonstrating Knowledge
Teachers should also know their students in addition to knowing what they teach.
Students learn through active intellectual engagement with the content.
The teacher needs to remove any misconceptions because every student learns differently.
Students have lives outside of school so the teacher should use the students interests to help them plan their lesson.
Every student is at a different learning level. For example, students whose first language is not English. So those things should be taken into consideration when planning a lesson.
1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes
Teaching is a purposeful activity.
The outcomes describe not the students will do but what they will learn.
Resources are suitable for diverse learners.
Various forms of assessments for all students to show their understanding of the content.
Value, Sequence, and Alignment- Students build their understanding of important ideas from concept to concept.
Clarity- What students will learn, not what they do.
Balance- Outcomes reflect students different types of learning, knowledge, conceptual understanding, and thinking skills.
1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources
Student's learning is enhanced by the teachers skillful use of resources.
Have resources that align directly with the learning outcomes and are of use to the students.
Have materials that further the teachers professional knowledge.
Have challenging materials.
1e: Designing Coherent Instruction
The heart of all lesson planning; reflects the teachers' knowledge of content
Teachers need to understand their students and how they learn.
Learning Activities- engages students
Instructional Materials and Resources- appropriate to the learning needs of the students.
Instructional Groups- intentionally organized to support student learning.
Lesson and Unit Structure- organization is clear and advances students learning.
1f: Designing Student Assessment
Assessment of and for learning.
Assessment of learning- students have learned the intended outcomes.
Assess reasoning skills and factual knowledge and different methods are needed.
Allow demonstration of understanding. ESL for example.
Assessment for learning- incorporate assessments directly into the instructional process and modify or adapt instruction.
Assessments match learning expectation.
Expectations are clearly defined.
Assessment for learning must be planned as a part of the instructional process.
Results of assessment guide the future planning.
