In this week long field, over May of 2021, myself and two other student teachers worked closely to plan a week long unit to fill some gaps in student knowledge due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. During this time, I worked with the same 1st grade classrooms everyday. The overall theme for the week focused on different professions and the knowledge that comes with those professions. We looked at Detectives, Scientists, Astronauts, Physical Trainers, and Pilots. We studied how fingerprints are unique and how they are important to our everyday lives. We did a fun activity with lifting our fingerprints off of an object with tape. When we studied Scientists, we learned about chemical vs. physical reactions. The students then observed a chemical reaction with Elephant Toothpaste. When we learned about Astronauts, the students made a replica of how far away the planets are from each other and made a paper plate book with the phases of the moon. For Physical Trainer day, the students learned about parts of their body (muscles, joints, tendons). We then went outside and practiced some stretches and exercises. For the last day, the students were online in Google Classroom. To create an inclusive environment, we listened to a song and the 7 continents, and worked together to place the continents in the correct place on a map.
This was such a great opportunity to give the students a fun and engaging last week of school and fill some gaps in knowledge the students may have had due to staying home during COVID-19. |
